Pandemonium and Pan Glossary
PAN’s sampler CDs are meant to give an introduction to the PAN catalogue of musical ensembles, instruments, and styles and is usually accompanied by a 4 - 8 page booklet.
Often the selection is made according to a common theme, like wedding, rhythm, dance, instruments, or overtone music.
Samplers in the International Series are named Pandemonium, referring to uproar/tumult. Pandemonium originally is the capital of Hell in Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’.
Samplers in the Ethnic Series are named Pan Glossary, referring both to ‘glossary’ (a collection of glosses or of specialized items with their meanings) and to ‘Pangloss’ who was the optimistic philosopher/teacher in Voltaire’s Candide, marked by the view that all’s for the best in this best of possible worlds. According to Pangloss the Pan Glossary CDs would be the best of all possible CDs, but PAN itself takes a more modest approach.
Miscellaneous
This category contains various CDs that don’t fit in the other categories, varying from music played on experimental bamboo music instruments to cross-over ethnic trance fusion.
